Preparing for General Conference

Combined Relief Society & Priesthood lesson for March 29, 2020:

From Cheyenne Miller

This has been the ultimate 6 month preparation for conference! We have become active after 5 years of inactivity, we went through the repentance process and partook of the sacrament for the first time in a long time, and my husband received the Melchizedek priesthood! We have been diligently studying scriptures every evening as a couple followed with a prayer together to end the day.

Coming into this general conference, we are feeling so much excitement and anticipation. I have written down some things I will be searching for during conference. I want to find ways that I can strengthen my weaknesses, and grow my testimony. I have found some guided journal pages that we will print out and then fill out during general conference! These pages ask for ways we can apply principles to our lives, promptings we may have felt, and new perspectives we hadn’t considered before.

We have had many discussions about how blessed we are to be part of this gospel once again. We have been doing everything we can to make sure the spirit can dwell in our home. This includes making sure we are having time as a family to search the scriptures and past conference talks together. Family home evening and meal times have become sacred opportunities for us to connect to each other and heaven! We want to make sure we are ready and receptive when the time comes so that we can receive direction and inspiration! On another note: we bought snacks and found fun crafts to hopefully keep our toddler busy so we can watch.

Enos Chapter 1,1:

Enos talks about his father and how he was a just man, That he taught Enos in his Language and also the NUTURE and ADMONITION of the Lord.

  • For all the youth, A couple of notes; As parents we have a responsibility to share the gospel, specifically the Book of Mormon, The gospel of Repentance and our testimonies of the Savior Jesus Christ with our children
  • You as Sons and Daughters have the responsible to respect and listen to your parents teachings.  I love the first verse of Enos.  Enos had listened to his father and knew two things
  • Nurture Meaning: Care for and encourage the growth or development of.
  • Admonition Meaning: To warn.

As Enos goes the the forest to hunt beast, I find it very humbling that he first went to understand his standing with our Savior and for forgiveness of sin. Enos 1,3-8 Enos heard the voice of the lord:

“And there came a voice unto me, Saying: Enos thy sins are forgiven thee”.

  • The words we read in the book of Mormon need to be liked unto ourselves.  I have a strong testimony that as we ask our Heavenly Father in the name of his Son, Jesus Christ, we can feel and hear in our hearts if we listen that our sins can and will be forgiven

Once Enos felt the love of our Savior and his voice. He then thought of his Brethren the Nephites. Enos, 1, 9Missionary Work,  Enos Says:

“Now, it came to pass that when I had heard these words I began to feel a desire for the welfare of my Brethren, the Nephites; wherefore, I did pour out my whole soul unto God for them”.

  • Once we feel the blessing and the love from our Savior, It becomes naturally the desire of our hearts to reach out to our family, friends, and eventually to serve a mission to share the Gospel of Happiness.
  • I encourage all of you, to pray to our heavenly father for forgiveness daily, to share the gospel with your Family and Friends, And I promise that we can find purpose and happiness in our life

Ending: Enos Says this:

“And after I, Enos, had heard these words, My faith began to be unshaken in the Lord”.

Karen and I have graduated in our family to the point that General Conference is a time of great anticipation.  We no longer have young children at home that we try to teach and keep interested in television church.  We can now relax and enjoy conference without being distracted.  We prepare ourselves for conference simply by hungering and thirsting for the words of inspired leaders.

Part of our preparation also includes inviting our children and grandchildren over for scones between Sunday sessions.  We enjoy having family traditions that tie family to our religious beliefs.  This allows us to discuss the morning session and any changes that brought and helps us look forward to the final session of conference.

To be honest my preparation for General Conference stinks and could use some help! That’s probably why I got asked to do this!

🙃

As I’ve pondered and asked my family about what our family could do to prepare for this conference a couple of ideas came to our minds.

💭
  • Watch the First Vision and talk about it as a family today.👀
  • Ponder and Pray about questions and/or directions were needed to take in our lives. Then read our scriptures and listen to past conference talks related to the topic of our questions.🙏
  • Pray for individuals you can invite to watch conference. Call or text 1 or more people each day and extend an invitation to watch General Conference.🙇‍♀️🙇‍♂️
  • Have family draw the Prophet and 12 Apostles. Then throughout the week share the drawings and look up a few fun facts about each General Authority. Learn about 3 General Authorities each day leading up to conference.👨🎨✏👩🎨
  • Find and print different General Conference Packets for our kids and get journals ready. 🖨📖
  • Get a good night sleep Thursday and Friday night so you’ll be alert for conference.🛌
  • Work hard on Friday to clean our house so our environment feels more peaceful!🗑🛋🛏🚽

I know that the more we are able to prepare for conference the more we will be able to find answers to our questions, have peace in our soul and allow the Holy Ghost to speak truths to our minds.💆‍♂️💆‍♀️

D&C 78:18 helps me endure and feel hope in that we all can return to Heaven with Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ’s direction. It also gives me a call to serve the world!  There are feet to steady, hands to grasp, minds to encourage, hearts to inspire and souls to save. The blessings of eternity await us! Ours is a privilege to be not spectators but part participants in this great service and work! This conference I pray that each of us will have undeniable direction in who we can lift up and love one day at a time! 🤟💗
